Research has found that mind maps and diagrams can increase recall from 10 to 30 % over traditional notes. Mind maps and diagrams can also provide a good overview of the subject you are learning. It helps the brain organize this material by providing a visual picture of the subject. Diagrams and mind maps can also be fun to create. Here are a couple of guidelines to help you create your mind map or diagram, but remember to use whatever works best for you.
Step 1. Write the topic in the center of the paper. You may want to circle it, draw a box, or draw a picture around it.
Step 2. Draw spokes from the center with each spoke being a new topic or idea. The spokes do not have to be straight. They can be curved, a picture, or anything else that works.
Step3. Describe each idea with a written description or a picture. Remember to use numbers, colors, or pictures with your mind maps or diagrams.
