Mackenzie's BIG Idea, "Shelter Libraries", provides books for children who live in homeless shelters and would not otherwise have access to books. Six years ago Mackenzie was diagnosed with a painful neurological condition; she found the only way to get her mind off the pain was to escape into a great book.
Mackenzie thought about how reading helped her get her mind off her pain, and hoped that books could do the same thing for children in shelters, helping them escape their emotional, mental and physical pains and fears. She gathered up her books she no longer needed and asked friends and neighbors if they had books to donate and her book drive took off. Previously Mackenzie had books in shelters in 6 states. With the help of the BE BIG in Your Community Contest grant, she now has books in 25 states!
