In this 1st grade lesson for addition facts, Mathy (my mascot) and I study the sums with 5 - two numbers that add up to 5 (also called number bonds):
5 + 0
4 + 1
3 + 2
... and the other way around.
Then I drill these sums with the viewers using missing number additions (such as 2 + ___ = 5). Your child can try to answer my drill questions as far as he/she can!
These number bonds or sums with 5 will help children learn their addition facts for first grade math :)
After the drill, we solve some simple addition problems that form PATTERNS. Mathematics has been called the science of patterns, and these patterns also help your child gain conceptual understanding of addition.
Lastly, we practice a few "how many more" addition problems -- also called "missing number" problems.
Check out also the 1st grade workbook Math Mammoth Addition 1 at http://www.mathmammoth.com/addition_1.php - it contains the same idea for learning addition facts as you see in the video (for sums with 10, plus it has lessons for sums with 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 also). Download the free samples today!
