multiplying-polynomials-that-contain-fractions

Example problem involving multiplying polynomials that contain fractions.

The sample problem is 2/3x^2(8x-12^2

Transcript

I picked this one to go over. 2/3x^2(8x-12^2) We have a monomial times a binomial. All we need to do is distribute, but let's look at the fraction. When you multiply by a fraction stick a one under your whole number. We will have 2/3 times 8/1 which will give me 16/3. The 2 x8=16 and the 3 x1 =3, you just multiply the top and the bottom. x times x^2 gives me x^3 Now let's multiply 2/3x^2 x^2 times - 12. Again, just place a 1 under the 12 So 2 times -12 equals 24 and x^2 times x^2 equals x^4 There is our first step,we distributed and divided by our fraction. Now we need to get it in the correct order. Notice we have a x^3 and a x^4 so we need to switch the order. Now this one reduces, take it down to simplest form. 24/3 =8 x^4 and it is still negative so and we have a positive 16/3x^3 and you want to leave it as a improper fraction because it is easier to work with.
