Interactive video lesson plan for: Equality Step 1 - Modeling Equal Fractions, Equality Test (Video #4)

Activity overview:

Two methods for determining equality of fractions is illustrated. First Fraction Bars are compared, and if they have the same amount of shading, their fractions are equal. All students can be successful at this activity. The second method involves splitting the part of a bar to obtain more parts and more shaded parts. This activity leads directly to the rule for obtaining equal fractions, that is, multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number. This powerful model for illustrating the rule for obtaining equal fractions is seldom found in textbooks. A list of pairs of equal fractions is used to discover the cross multiplication test for determining when two fractions are equal. The video ends with demonstrations of the free interactive web games "Concentration-Whole Bars" and "Bars and Cards" from fractionbars.com.
