A Czech-Polish team of explorers has discovered that an underwater cave known as Hranická Propast in eastern Czechia (Czech Republic) drops to a point about 1,325 feet below ground, making it the deepest opening of its kind in the world. For team leader and National Geographic grantee Krzysztof Starnawski, the discovery is the culmination of years of exploration at the site, named for the nearby town of Hranice.
To help a remotely operated vehicle reach the record-breaking point, Starnawski dived about half the depth of the cave and placed a lighted cable at the newly formed mouth to the deepest chamber. Following decompression, he rejoined his colleagues to watch as the small submarine’s video feed recorded the new sounding.
