This Google+ Hangout was part of the Education On Air conference on May 2, 2012.
When performing scenes in high school, one rarely has enough time to learn about the playwright, his or her vision for the play, and understand the scene as part of a larger story of the play. The "Play, The Playwright, and Your Scene" provides a model for theater (or English) students the opportunity to build a deeper and more three-dimensional vision for their characters.
Using Google Sites, students begin by researching a playwright's life and work and by reading a key play (http://goo.gl/tURHd). After choosing a scene, students then start a conversation with the playwright. Although the playwrights will not join in the venture, the students will have the opportunity to speak in the voice of the playwright and write an original scene based on what they have learned about his or her life.
In a project that combines research with creativity, students will showcase their work with two rich and detailed performances (http://goo.gl/IMrbD) and published in Google Docs, Sites, and Video/YouTube.
