James Recommends World War I games in honor of our series of Extra History on how the Great War began. The first person shooter Verdun puts you directly in the shoes of a soldier fighting with a squad in multiplayer co-op, while grand strategy games like Commander: The Great War and To End All Wars put you in charge of the entire Allied or Central forces. Valiant Hearts tells a more human, personal story of individuals struggling to survive. Rise of Flight offers a documentary level of historical accuracy as a World War I flight simulator. Finally, you can look back at the conflicts that drove the 19th century to the brink of war with Victoria II.

Plus! A Halloween special: James Recommends 1916: Der Ubenkannte Krieg (The Forgotten War), a first person horror game about a panicked soldier fleeing from dinosaurs in the trenches. It's free and you can play right in your browser!
