Lionhead Studios sponsored this episode on Fable Legends. They had no editorial input over the content.
Fable Legends will be a cross-platform game for XBox One and Windows 10, with the hope that the multiplayer friendly PC community will boost the audience on the traditionally single player console. But it will also need a large audience to support its status as a free-to-play title with AAA quality production values. Their promise to produce free-to-play content at that level offers plenty of clear benefits in terms of quality and player satisfaction with good releases, but also poses considerable risks. The increased development time and cost must either be passed on to the players in the form of a higher price cash shop or swallowed by the studio with low margins. It also takes time to produce such high tier content, and if the playerbase grows bored and moves on before the next release, the studio won't be able to sell enough content to support development. Whether or not the game succeeds will be a case study for the rest of the games industry.
