Products involving fractions and mixed number are illustrated with Fraction Bars and by solving word problems. First a word problem is solved by multiplying a fraction times a mixed number. Then a word problem is solved by multiplying a mixed number times a mixed number. This same problem is then solved by replacing both mixed number by improper fractions. As in Multiplication Step 1, the use of the word "of" in place of the times sign helps students to make sense out of products involving fractions times mixed numbers. Finally, reciprocals of fractions and whole numbers are introduced and there is a visual illustration showing that a fraction times its reciprocal equals 1. A National Assessment result shows that 30% of the eleventh graders incorrectly computed 4 times the mixed number 2 and 1/4. The video ends with a demonstration of the free interactive web game "Two-Par Golf" from fractionbars.com.
