In this 1st grade lesson for addition facts, Mathy (my mascot) and I study the pattern in sums with 9 - two numbers that add up to 9 (also called number bonds):
9 + 0
8 + 1
7 + 2
6 + 3
5 + 4
... and the other way around.
Then I - and Mathy! - drill these sums with the viewers using missing number additions (such as 2 + ___ = 9). Your child can try to answer my drill questions as far as he/she can!
These number bonds will help children learn their addition facts for first grade math :)
Then we solve one word problem about blueberry icream.
Lastly, we solve comparison problems, comparing a sum to a number. For example, which is more, 3 + 6 or 10?
Check out also the 1st grade workbook Math Mammoth Addition 1 at http://www.mathmammoth.com/addition_1.php - it contains the same idea for learning addition facts as you see in the video (for sums with 9, plus it has lessons for sums with 6, 7, 8, and 10 also). Download the free samples today!
