Equine therapy is a form of experiential learning in which an individual learns by riding a horse. Here are ways that you can benefit from interacting with a horse.

Step 1: Increase your confidence
Increase your self confidence. When you learn that you can control a horse that weights 1000 pounds, you will increasingly take control of other aspects of your life.

Step 2: Improve your interpersonal skills
Improve your interpersonal skills. Horses offer unconditional love to their riders. This serves as a stepping stone toward helping you feel better about yourself and others.

Learning to trust a horse often leads to increased trust in other people.

Step 3: Improve your sensitivity to non-verbal cues
Improve your sensitivity to non-verbal communication cues. By becoming sensitive to the horse's response to non-verbal communication, you will develop a greater awareness of how these cues play a role in your interactions with other people.

Step 4: Become more extroverted
Become more extroverted. Grooming and caring for a horse is a great way to redirect your attention and interests outwardly.

Step 5: Become more assertive
Become more assertive. Riding a horse requires you to be assertive while giving directions. This skill carries over into other relationships.

Did You Know?
Modern equine therapy has its roots in the experiential movement therapy of the 1970s.
