When your friends are arguing, you try to calm down the situation, that means you appease such a situation. Sometimes, store managers have to give extra benefits to appease angry customers. So basically, the word 'appease' means, to calm or satisfy a person, or a desire, by giving what is asked for or needed.
'Appease' is a Verb, as it is an act of satisfying or calming.
