Cuban President Raul Castro was born on June 3, 1931, near Biran, Cuba. He was expelled from school and joined a socialist political group. He assisted his brother, Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader, during most of his adult life. Once Fidel Castro assumed power, Raul became head of the armed forces and served as Cuba's defense minister. Raul succeeded Fidel as president in February 2008.
