Activity overview:

Multiplication of a whole number times a fraction and a fraction times a whole number are visually illustrated. First, the product of a whole number times a fraction is viewed as repeated addition. This approach helps to show that such a product can be obtained by multiplying the whole number times the numerator of a fraction and keeping the denominator. Second, the product of a fraction times a whole number is illustrated by taking part of a set of chips. Using the word "of" in place of the multiplication sign when multiplying a fraction times a whole number helps students keep an intuitive understanding of the meaning of the times symbol. By listing some of the products of a fraction times a whole number, the short cut method of computing such products by canceling can be discovered by students.
