Interactive video lesson plan for: The "I'm Only Here Because I Have To Be" Tutee

Activity overview:

This scenario takes place in a mock version of the writing center; a quiet and comfortable place to get help on papers. In this tutoring scenario the tutee is only there because it is required by her professor as part of her grade. The tutor is played by Jaennetta and the part of the tutee is played by Sarah T. This video addresses the issue of a tutee that has no interest in really getting any help or assistance with her paper, she just wants it signed so she can get on with her life. In this scenario the tutor feels annoyed and does not know how to respond with the way that the tutee is acting. As the session ends the tutee tries to force the tutor to sign her paper as proof that she was there, rather than taking in the help that the tutor is trying to give her because she doesn't really care about the assistance. The tutor does not know how to handle this and therefore she tries to do her best to get the student interested but there is no way of getting this student involved. In the Bedford Guide for Writing Tutors, chapter five talks about student concerns and how they may be less concerned about school, and more concerned about their social life, or their lifestyle, i.e., personal issues. In this case, the tutee is definitely not concerned with their academic paper; instead she is only concerned with her social life and what she is going to do after the session.

Discussion Questions:
1. What are some ways to deal with this without letting your emotions get in the way?
2. How would you deal with an uncooperative student who was only there because they had to be there?
3. Would you sign (or stamp) the paper? Why or why not?
4. What could the tutor have done differently?
