Are dogs as smart as a two year old?
I have always had at least two dogs, and have always been impressed with how smart they are, but are they as smart as a two year old.
Let’s look at two couple of areas.
The first area that we will look at is language.
On average two year olds understand around 200 to 250 words, and are able to speak around 50 words.
On average dogs understand around 150 to 200 words. Personally my dogs know their name, walk, any variation of walk, and many more words. They also understand tone of voice really well. They can pick up on my mood, by my tone. Unfortunately, they can’t speak.
The top dogs for language are poodles, border collies, and german shepherds.
Check out these two dogs and how they recognize certain words.
The next area I would like to look at is spatial awareness. The area I would like to look at is finding valuable objects, or operate simple objects like latches or door knobs.
Two year olds can move a stool to reach something or find something out of sight with limited success. Dogs can do the same dogs are also great at learning commands and tricks for treats. Here are some examples.
I would say that in these two areas I would give 2 years olds the victory in language, but dogs the win in spatial awareness.
