Giving and receiving compliments is an art and in this Skillopedia session with me Michelle, you’re going to master the art of complimenting. Stay tuned till the end for knowing all the golden rules for “complimenting someone”.

Everyone enjoys receiving compliments. Compliments help you create positive connections with your coworkers. I want to encourage you to give a great compliment. It can revolutionize how people feel about you because when a compliment is given well, it touches the core of who that person is. It affirms the best aspects of who they are and what they are made of. A powerful compliment is a gift you give to others - a way of expressing gratitude and good will in the world.

BE SPECIFIC WITH YOUR COMPLIMENTS

In order to be specific with your compliments you need to find out about the individual you want to compliment. Try to find out their goals, interests, likes and dislikes. If you’re not specific then the listener might feel that your comment is not genuine. So, to sound real, be real 
For example: Your hard work has shined through and made a difference to the overall performance.

AVOID GIVING EXCESSIVE COMPLIMENTS TO ONE PERSON

If you continuously compliment the same person it may seem that you’re trying to gain some personal favours from them. The best solution to this would be to evenly spread the compliments among your colleagues at the workplace or in your personal relationships.
For example: "Your clothes are always so interesting. I wish I knew how to put outfits together the way you can!"

POINT YOUR COMPLIMENT TO ONE’S CHARACTER

You should frame your compliment based on a person’s character. Your compliment should highlight an individual’s qualities of being generous, courageous, hardworking etc.
For example: Your guidelines for this task have only made it possible for me to complete it within the deadline.

BE AUTHENTIC WITH YOUR COMPLIMENTS

You must compliment only when it’s deserved by the other person. If you fake a compliment it will be quite evident and may become a spoiler in your relationships. On the other hand don’t hesitate from appreciating when your appreciation is valued. Find the gifts in others and gift them a smile by complimenting their efforts or character.
For example: "You have the neatest desk in the office. Have you always been so organized?"

Think of someone in your life whom you have not complimented in a while. What specifically would you like to compliment them about? How could you word the compliment in a way that will make it authentic and acknowledge the essence of who they are?
I hope these golden rules will help you compliment the hidden gems in your life.
