This video describes how forensic science expert Dr Melanie Bailey on how she uses forensic physics principles and forensic analysis on gunshot residue to help catch the bad guys.
When Dr. Melanie Bailey used to sneak biscuits from the cookie jar, she worried about leaving behind clues that might enable her mother to link her to the crime. In this video we meet Dr Melanie Bailey some years later in her work as a forensic scientist.
She explains, "I actually gave up crime and became a physicist. But I'm still absolutely fascinated by the way that forensic science can be used to link traces of evidence with a particular crime, and so now I've devised a completely new way to help catch the bad guys. I've developed a new technique for forensic analysis of gunshot residue. Even CSI doesn't know about this yet."
"Gunshot residue are tiny particles ejected from a gun when you fire it. They can persist on your clothes several days after shooting. When I collect my gunshot residue samples I put them into the Ion Beam accelerator and this generates a beam of charged particles and accelerates them at the speed of light to forensic samples."
