Super Bowl Sunday (February 7th) is fast approach and this weekend’s Conference Finals games will decide who will play for this season’s NFL Championship. With so much buzz surrounding the Cardinals, Panthers, Patriots, and Broncos, we wanted to give all the young math students out there an opportunity to apply a math mindset to figuring out the probability of each team to win the 2016 Super Bowl. We also share our official Super Bowl prediction and invite you to share yours as well. For more real-world math lessons and activities, subscribe to MashUp Math on YouTube: http://bit.ly/1QzlNsV. This lesson is an informal Notice/Wonder activity to prelude a 6th grade intro unit on the concepts of simple probability and statistics.
Some big questions heading into this weekend's playoff games: What are the Super Bowl odds? Will Tom Brady defeat Peyton Manning? Can Carson Palmer defeat Cam Newton? Who will win the Super Bowl? Who is predicted to win the Super Bowl?
Our lessons are perfect for flipped classroom math teachers and students and for warm-up and exit ticket activities . This lesson is aligned with the 7th grade common core math learning standards for math and the SAT math curriculum as well.
