6 useful English phrases with horses -- Free English lesson
We have more phrases about horses than any other animal; only phrases about dogs come close. Horses don't loom large in the lives of most English-speaking people today, but they did at the time that the modern English began to be formed. In this lesson we will learn six phrases with horses.
Get off your high horse:
To stop acting arrogant or superior.
Example : Get off your high horse , you aren't as smart as you think you are.
Eat like a horse:
To eat large amounts of food
Example : I eat like a horse.
To Flog / Beat a dead horse:
Fruitless effort
Example : He keeps going for auditions but I think he's flogging/beating a dead horse.
To Hold your horses:
If you are doing something too fast and you need to hold on or slow down.
Example : She has invested a lot of money .she needs to hold her horses.
Straight from the horse's mouth:
From authoritative or dependable source.
Example : She is quitting her job, I heard it straight from the horse's mouth.
To Back the wrong horse:
To support someone or something that cannot succeed.
Example : I invested a lot of money on him and eventually realized I have backed a wrong horse.
