Solving Quadratic Equations with a lead coefficient of 1 by factoring

Step 1: Set the equation equal to 0 in descending order.

Step 2: The lead coefficient must equal to one to factor this way

Step 3: Factor the trinomial so the value of c, the last term, is the product of two numbers that add to the middle term, b. Write the factors in the form:

(x +/- factor)(x+/-factor)

Step 4. Set each binomial equal to 0.

Step 5: Solve each one step equation for the solution.

Questions answered in this video...

How do you factor a trinomial?

What are the steps involved in factoring?

What do do once you have the equation factored?

What do you do if the equation is not equal to zero?

What is the lead coefficient?

Video Guide

0:17 Solve m^2 -5m -14 =0 This involves factoring a trinomial with a lead coefficient of 1

1:48 Solve x^2 -x =12 In order to solve this equation you need to get the 12 all together and the equation equal to 0 then factor

3:07 Solve 3x^2 + 24x +45 =0
