Interactive video lesson plan for: The Adventures of Stoke Mandeville, Astronaut and Gentleman: Episode One

Activity overview:

Written by Messrs Fraser Charlton and Nikolas Lloyd.

Cast, in approximate order of height:

Steve - Sean Winnie
Angry Man in the Street - Colin Cuthbert
Rachael Binkley - Emma Hydleman
Graham Pennyworth - Jamie Osborn
Braithewaite/French waiter - Sebastion Davidson
Narrator - Fraser Charlton
Stoke Mandeville - Nikolas Lloyd

Music composed by Tom Albans and performed by the Knottingley Silver Band.

This was first written in 1994 as a six-part radio series. A pilot was made, but nobody at the BBC was prepared to listen to it, because it didn't involve anyone famous. It was later rewritten for the theatrical stage and performed for the first time in 2001 in Newcastle upon Tyne before being transferred to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2002, where it was a minor hit. Since then, it has been performed on stage in Cambridge twice, Highgate, Guildford, and Adelaide Australia. The stage version can be performed by a cast as small as five.

The entire video production has been made for a cost of £1831.14, and this goes some way towards explaining the picture quality. It was made with a crew of nought, which explains why the camera never moves; and recorded in an art gallery between exhibitions, which explain the echoes. It was produced, directed, costumed, lit, photographed, audio-recorded, and edited by Nikolas Lloyd, who also did all the 3D design, graphics, sound effects, and special visual effects.

Thanks to the "Oak" restaurant, Dean Street, Newcastle, for allowing us to photograph backgrounds for the restaurant scene there.

God save the King!
