Avery and Maria are two dolphin-loving 12-year-old girls who live near the beach in Southern California. Other than that, their lives are worlds apart, or so they think. Avery's parents are recently divorced, and she and her mom have just moved to California. She has no friends and is trying to overcome her fear of swimming in the ocean. Maria, who was born in Mexico, lives on the other, less-affluent side of town and is artistic, shy, and quiet. She's hoping to get accepted into a prestigious art program. When both girls end up in a secluded cove to watch the dolphins, they become friendly and bond over a unique-looking dolphin who likes to show off for them. Friendship and family tensions escalate, but in the end the girls come together to help their dolphin friend, and each other.
