Follow these steps to teach long division in grade 4. In step #1, students divide numbers with digits that are evenly divisible by the divisor, such as 963 / 3 or 4082 / 2 so that there are no remainders.

In step #2, students divide numbers with a remainder in the ones (units), such as 965 / 3 or 4085 / 2, thus learning the process of "multiply & subtract" for finding the remainder.

In step #3, the remainder is in the tens (for example 87 / 3 or 95 / 5).

Lastly, students use long division to divide longer numbers, where there are remainders in any place value.
