Interactive presentation plan for: Physical Changes in Matter

Activity overview:

5 slides

Kinds of Physical Changes

A scoop of ice cream will melt quickly if it is dropped on a hot sidewalk. Even though it will melt when heat is added, the melting is only a physical change. The ice cream will still be made out of sugar, cream, and flavoring.

Kinds of Physical Changes

Separating a Mixture

You completed a science lab yesterday in which you had to separate a mixture. You had to think about the physical properties of salt, iron fillings, and rice in order to separate the mixture.

Think about the mixture of salt, iron filings, and rice.

Now imagine that we had added warm water to the mixture and stirred it rapidly in a glass. The salt would dissolve into the water and create a solution.

Great discussion!
