Follow these simple steps to add and subtract integers.
Transcript
Welcome to MooMooMath and adding and subtracting integers
Yes, then are the signs the same? yes
Add the absolute value of the addends
Give the sum the sign of the addends
If the problem is addition and the signs are different then,
using the absolute values, subtract the smaller number from the greater number.
Give the the sum the sign of the number with the absolute value.
If the problem is subtraction and not addition,
change the subtraction sign to addition, change the sign of the number behind the subtraction sign to it's opposite, then add
Ok let's work some addition and subtraction of integers problems.
Is the problem addition? yes
Are the signs the same? yes
Add the absolute value of the two numbers, and the absolute value of 5 and 2 = 7
I next take the sign of the two numbers you adding which is negative 7
Next, is the problem addition? yes
Are the signs the same? No
I subtract the absolute value of the smaller number from the larger number.
This is the same as 7 -3
You then take the sign of the larger number.
We now have a subtraction problem
Is the problem addition? No
Is it subtraction? yes
Change the subtraction sign to addition and the sign of the number behind the addition sign
Is it addition? yes
Are the signs the same? No
Subtract the absolute value of the smaller number.
We will have 6-1 and take the sign of the larger number.
Same thing again.
No Change subtraction to addition, and change the sign of the number behind that.
Now, add these together 12+ 5 = 17
Because both are addition, the answer will be positive
Finally, 8 + negative 4
Is it addition? yes
Are the signs the same? no
Subtract the absolute value of the smaller number from the larger number, and take the sign of the larger number.
Hope this helps with adding and subtracting integers.
