Using the number line, write the integer which is:

3 less than -2.

Here we want to know the integer 3 less than —2. So, we start from —2 on the number line and move through 3 units to the left of it to obtain —5.

In order to add two integers on a number line, we follow the following step wise procedure:

PROCEDURE

STEP I Draw o number line and mark integers on it. ‘

STEP II Start from the point representing the first number on the number line.

STEP lII Move as many units as the second number to the

(I) right of the first number, if the second number is positive.

(ii) left of the first number, if the second number is negative.

STEP IV Obtain the number representing the point reached in the previous step. This

number represents the required sum of the given integers.

In this video we will explain the use of the above procedure to add two ( or more than two ) integers on a

number line.
