# Interactive video lesson plan for: Sums with 8 - addition lesson for 1st grade math

#### Activity overview:

In this 1st grade addition lesson, children learn the number bonds (number combinations) that make a sum of 8. I use pictures for these sums of 8, and also point out a specific PATTERN in them:

8 + 0 = 8 | 0 + 8 = 8
7 + 1 = 8 | 1 + 7 = 8
6 + 2 = 8 | 2 + 6 = 8
5 + 3 = 8 | 3 + 5 = 8
4 + 4 = 8

After presenting these addition facts I drill them briefly on the board, and I wait for the children to say the answers (as they watch the video).

Then we solve a few miscellaneous missing number addition problems and number line addition problems (as if for review).

Besides sums of 8, children also need to study and understand the patterns in sums of 6, 7, 9, and 10.
