James Recommends Civilization: Beyond Earth and Endless Legend, 4X world-building strategy games that invite the player to conquer space and fantasy, respectively. Both games have similar design challenges and choices, such as a radial research menu that lets you discover any new technology at any time, that present interesting opportunities but also create information overload. This is due in part to their unique settings and the designers' efforts to preserve the alien and magical apects of both despite needing to make the game worlds understandable for players whose primary experience is rooted in the history of Earth.
