Interactive video lesson plan for: Addition Step 1 Models for Adding Fractions (Video #10)

Activity overview:

Addition of fractions is first illustrated by placing together the shaded amounts of two Fraction Bars. This model helps students to see that addition of fractions has basically the same meaning as the addition of whole numbers, that is, two quantities are being combined. Addition of fractions is then illustrated by showing the result of the total progress for two bars on the Small Step Race mat, where the twelfths bars on the mat provide the common denominator for the fractions in the twelfths family. The second model used for illustrating addition of fractions is the number line. This video shows a list of the games from the Grades 5-8 Fraction Bars Guide for the videos on Basic Concepts, Equality, Inequality, and Addition. The video ends with a demonstration of the free interactive web game "Concentration - Whole Bars" from
