A geological survey around Hanzhong in northwest China discovered a large cluster of 49 natural sinkholes. Some of these sinkholes were more than 984 feet (300 meters) deep and one is 1,706 feet (520 meters) in diameter. Within these sinkholes were ten types of rare plants, primitive forests and Chinese giant flying squirrels. Because of their remote location, the sinkholes were well-preserved and may hold valuable information on the Earth's paleoclimate.
