Learn proper Twitter etiquette before all of your Twitter followers hit a collective "unfollow."

Step 1: Follow people
Follow people. You're under no obligation to tweet. If you just want to follow people to see what they're up to, do so.

Many celebrities rely on followers to advertise appearances and shows.

Step 2: Don't live-tweet without a byline
Avoid cluttering up your followers' feed by live-tweeting events in your life or your every thought unless you have another source, such as a blog or website, dedicated to the material. Include a link to the blog or website, so that Twitter followers can read more if they wish by clicking on the link.

John Hodgman can live-tweet his scrabble games because he's a humorist and gets paid to be funny.

Step 3: Be sure you're funny
Don't use humorous hashtags unless you're funny. If you're not really starting a trending topic, don't get carried away with the hashtags.

Step 4: Don't depress your followers
Don't tweet every sad occurrence in your life. While people probably want to keep up with you, it's no fun reading tweets that chronicle everything wrong in your life.

Step 5: Don't impersonate a celebrity
Don't open an account using a celebrity's name. Your account will get suspended.

Step 6: Don't worry about tweeting all the time
Don't worry about tweeting all the time or inserting tweeting time into your everyday schedule. It's perfectly acceptable to take a break once in a while.

Lots of people take extended periods of time off from tweeting just so it doesn't become an obsession.

Step 7: Post all the pics you want
Post as many pictures as you want. The beauty of Twitter pictures is that your audience has a choice about whether to look at them. If your comment about the picture doesn't interest the follower, they can skip it.

Did You Know?
In April 2010, Twitter announced that it had 106 million registered users and was adding new users at the rate of 300,000 per day.
