One of the biggest challenges facing space exploration is propulsion. Our main go-to, rocket fuel, is heavy, expensive, and can easily run out during travel. Fortunately, the solution might come in the form of solar sails.
The Planetary Society has already tested the solar sail deployment mechanism designed for Lightsail. The next step? Building a deep-space vehicle that uses solar sails as the primary means of propulsion.
