Leigh and her team had a BIG idea for a tutoring program that would directly facilitate the education of the recent refugee population in their community, called "Summer Express". These kids, who vary in age from 6 to 12, have been in the United States for less than 6 months. Behind in school, with few English skills, they feel the kids are at a great disadvantage, and their new schools are not able to provide them with the individual attention that they need. Summer Express gives these kids an opportunity to learn and grow in a safe, nurturing environment. The tutors who are current and recent alumni students focus on math, English and writing skills to give the kids the strongest foundations they can possibly.
With the help of the BE BIG in Your Community Contest grant, Leigh and her team were able to expand the Summer Express program, adding cultural field trips and other activities to help vary the students day.
