Blisters on your mouth can be embarrassing, but you can get rid of cold sores quickly with these remedies.

Step 1: Avoid touching
Avoid touching, picking, or scratching a cold sore. This will facilitate healing and reduce spreading of the virus.

Step 2: Use ointment
Use over-the-counter ointments when burning, itching, and tingling of the skin begins.

Talk to your doctor about prescription ointments if you have frequent outbreaks. See a doctor if cold sores remain after two weeks of treating with home remedies.

Step 3: Clean infected area
Clean the infected area with a warm washcloth and antibacterial soap.

Step 4: Apply petroleum jelly
Apply petroleum jelly directly to the cold sore. This will seal in the virus, reduce irritation, and prevent further infection.

Don't dip your finger back in the jar after touching the sore. Use a cotton swab to apply.

Step 5: Replace toothbrush
Replace your toothbrush and toothpaste to avoid recurrence.
