James Recommends the Anno series, spanning (in this video) from Anno 1404 to Anno 2070. All the games use a similar system to encourage the player to build realistic town layouts, with zones for agriculture and industry separate from residential areas. They also introduce complex trade networks, with resources that must be traded between islands or fed into major production areas as the civilization grows and becomes more sophisticated. While Anno 1404 (also known as Dawn of Discovery in the US) and its mobile spin-off simply called "Anno" let the player explore the past, Anno 2070 puts the player into a technologically advanced future.
