In which our presenter contends that most ancient shields had a single central grip, rather than two straps as depicted in most films, comics, and such like media. He then endeavours to point out the advantages of centre-grip shields over cross grip shields.
So convinced are many modern people that shields should have two straps, that modern police riot shields have them, and are as a result much less effective than they could be.
The shield you see here is laminated wood with a mild steel boss, and rawhide edging. It weighs about 16 lbs (7kg).
