I compare the long division process with sharing money ($711) evenly between three people. The seven 100-dollar bills cannot be divided evenly between the three, so there is one 100-dollar bill left over. We "change" that into ten 10-dollar bills. Now we have 20 ten-dollar bills to share. Those can't be shared evenly either; there are 2 ten-dollar bills left over. They are then "changed" into 1-dollar bills (or coins) and lastly the 21 1-dollar bills or coins are shared between the three people.
